I chat with Matt today at Stfd Robotics Open House.
He lives in SF... same contact info.
Working for start-up doing 3D "photos" ie making 3 d models
using Kinect camera... snap from perhsp 3-4 difft angles and make super accurate
3d high res model of object (he shows me a woman lying on a pillow... v high res).
Wants my thots on applications... eg  make an Avatar of yourself;
pre and post surgery; plastic surg; catalogs for e-bay etc.

his company WAS REACTRIX in RWC (failed). he was CTO/founder.
3d vision.

His KEY PREDICTION was that several companies would have really low cost 3d sensors (like 20 bucks)
within 2 years.

He recommends looking at TYZX... vision start-up in Menlo Park.

company failed cuz CEO took them down finished product advertis path.

Fantastic Talk at Convergence today.

3D sensing of objects.

project IR blotches and see how the object deforms them... can then model the object.
(like professor walking in front of projected overhead .

can use time of flight (eg laser)

near IR.

$1500 to do 3D vision... several camera companies working on it.

Mapping 3d environments
    collision avoidance
image segmentation... object recognition
pose estimation
tracking people
robotics (if u know where stuff is, the navigation just becomes a movement and stabilization problem.
pick and place in manufac.
delivery of materials/transport
security and military.
robotic cars (an interest of Brad Templeton)

he does Minority Report Interface (just use your hands)
big touch screens become cheap if you can track hands (don't need special screen)
use hand to change channel on TV.
real robotic pets... do 3d face recognition
screw camera into light bulb fixture... put these all over.

track and index the full 3d environment
traffic
crime/theft

REACTRIX
for corpor promotion

projects image that you interact with. Matt was founder.

many ways to do 3d vision: stereo matching, time of flight; IR; ASICs
all require high volume to make a profit
