2015 Dec 13 Windows 10 install Win10 Hell

Dec 13, 2015 04:20 PM

a total pain in the ass. I spent 6 hours today on this!

Here's what finally worked.

1) read How to clean install windows 10. qv (how-to geek)

2) Create Win10 upgrade media by first
downloading MSFT's media creation tool.

(I first tried... upgrade this PC now.. that was a fking disaster... see below)

so, next Create installation media for another PC.

this takes forever!!! so, please... KEEP the 4 gb USB I created.
(the fast part is downloading the files from the server... but there are
simply interminable steps after that... updating the files... checking your computer;
the download takes abt 2 mins; the rest takes perhaps 20 to 30 mins just
creating the ISO file on your computer... it is 3 GB and is one file.

3) next I mistakenly just COPIED that file onto a DVD and like a dummy
expected it to be bootable (see below.) No!

What worked is to a) plug in a 4 GB USB flash drive; then download RUFUS. and use
it to format the flash drive. (see groovypost). Then
use it to "Create a bootable disk using ISO Image and select the flash drive to write it to.
That takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

4) Leave that USB drive plugged in and now just reboot the computer and hit
the DEL key as it boots up; go into BOOT order/ instructions and tell it
to boot from the flash drive.

It works! It gives you the option to use your existing apps and data but I chose to do a clean
install... having been burned badly this morning (see below.)

It then installed a clean version of Win10 on my IVY ssd. I gave it my original Windows
product code for Win7 from 2012 and that was ok.

*
Now, what did NOT work and the mistakes I made that took hours today.

1) Just COPYING the WINDOWS ISO file to a DVD. I spent > an hour trying to figure out
why that DVD would not BOOT. What an idiot! The ISO file must be written to the
DVD as a bootable file (Note: I never did try that experiment. See my node
"Rufus Create a Windows 10 USB Bootable... " to see how to do that on a USB..

The guy who suggests using Disc Image Burner (qv Create Bootable Windows 10 DVD)
is MISLEADING. That program is NOT on my machine. It might be that
Free ISO burner might do it... but it looks crufty.
ImgBurn might be another option (but also looks amateurish)

2) Installing Win10 directly onto my computer (w/o creating an ISO file).
NO! (I don't remember whether it gave me the option (or not) of doing a
clean install or trying to install my apps and data, but I tried the latter.
(ie doing a Win10 install that included my apps and data). That resulted in
a LATE very PAINFUL failure. It look promising (after the long v painful
wait of perhaps an an entire hour) but then it STOPS and says...

0x80070004-0x4000D The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase
with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation......

It then kicked me out of the install process and put me back into Win7. This wasted about two hours!!!
Do NOT try this again!!!

Even before the above, I hit another problem as follows:

We couldn't update the system reserved partition....

3) I also tried the Win10 reservation process with a supposed upgrade at 3AM.
Nothing happens with that. It does start an install process but that seemed to go nowhere.
