Dale Purves: How Visual Evolution Determines What We See

Oct 14, 2013 08:48 PM

1) we don't see the physical world.

eg perception of luminance (eg as measured by a photometer)

but changed by surround: black rectangle surrounding the large polka dot.

same with lighted block with stripes: some apparently light vs dark.

Tom Cornsweet edge effect: instantaneous; gray vs black on cube surfaces.

these are not "illusion"... just the way we see luminance.

2) the reason we don't see the real world is that visual stimul do not/ cannot

specify physical params (the inverse optics problem)

3) vision circumvents the inverse problem by actively creating stimuli limited to those that promote reproductive success.
