free excerpt of this book starts at page 12 but is excellent... essential reading on interneurons...

page 12: figure 1.4 is beautiful drawing by Sventagothai from 1983.

the essence of the cortical microcircuit;

AACs are in a prime position (the axon hillock) and AIS to control the generation of action potentials;

whereas double bouquet cells (synap to dendritic spines) gate individual excitat inputs.

excellent description of interneurons and their functions...

look at the diagram of Szentagothai ... circuit diagram and

at the list of discoveries about interneurons. 8 discoveries

1) discov of chandelier cells... note the cartirdges = vertical rows of axonal terminals resemble candles on a chndelier.

they make syanpses on axon initial segments of pyram and gran cells in neocortex and HC.

also called axo-axonic cells.

3) GABAergic septo-hippocampal pathway innervates HC GABAergic interneurons.

this is a key element of the disinhibitory mechs leading to generation of the theta oscillations... Buzsaki 83.

4) some interneurons specifcally and excluseively innervate other interneurons.

5) the discov. that gap junctional, electrtical contacts preferentially exist btwn

interneurons of the same subtype.

6) back projection cells that cut across areas (in eg the HC)

8) the long sequence of spikes that can be generated in a set of neurons

by a single spike in a pyram cell in layer 2/3.
