VLAB Longevity
This is a VLAB symposium on Launching Longevity at SRI tonite
June 22, 2016.

many excellent panelists
(two keynotes: 1) Aubrey de Grey and 2) Daniel Kraft.

host is Sonia Arrison.. (new book)

Sonia asks a Q
what is a longevity company

Brian Kennedy...answers.... he is Direc of
Buck Instit for Research on Aging...
dx or intervention side.

Will Eden (Theil Capital)
maybe even extending max lifespan...
to fit into Aubrey's framwork
try to halt or reverse accumulation of damage..
eg lots of failure of amyloid hypothesis... what's going on?

Brian K: hard to separate longevity and metabolism.
(responding to Aubrey's notion that metab is too difficult to crack)

hard to separ tor, insulin IGF etc.

is healthspan a tradeoff with lifespan NO says Aubrey...
healthspan confers lifespan...

Sonia... is there something to invest in with a goal of 8 to 10 years...

Tom Rando... NO! this is really LT...research with LT payoff.
where the sweet spot btwn VCs and biologists.

where is the sweet spot... the low hanging fruit...

Joe McCracken...
Alkahest
he is a DVM, and VP of biz dev ...
they bot out their seed investors! so promising is this!

got 37M in equity investment...

has 5 to 6 years of cash...
did the basic sci ten years ago.

need angel investment or philanthropy..

Alkahest... check it out... what is it...

is there IP? how to protect your investment... (see Guardian article: parabiosis)

this is a panel...

BK = Brian Kennedy...

lots of perverse incentives to do sickcare rather than preventative care.

resveratrol or metformin how to do that and get it thru FDA
(DK daniel kraft calls it the f word)

what are the biomarkers of aging...
Novartis: studied everolimus... for aging.

and want to do healthspan study of metformin...
think that metformin will delay the 2nd chronic disease... only a 5 yr study... interesting study.
can metformin delay any 2nd chronic disease.

we really need preventative medicine.. a whole panoply of interventions...
that are pre-symtomatic...

tom rando... we do do pre sx rx like rx BHP = hypertension.

sarcopenia.. (tom continues)... they will be a disease as soon as we can rx it

(same as osteopenia... we now have rxs)

FDA is good, says Tom.. prevents hucksters.

*
takes Qs on her ipad... tweeted in...

how many of panelists... take seriously the notion of extending life to 150 years...

as we address healthspan then lifespan will increase.

goal is to incr healthspan

Joe McCracken...
our comp. was healthspan to be extended.
but we do have a moonshot project.
a biomarker of aging... probably many proteins.
prob. many proteins.
why do they advance at difft rates.

Will Eden...
drugs good at extending median healthspan but
nothing in physics to prevent age 150...he guesses.

want healthy max lifespan extension...

Dan Kraft Calico, gather genomes fron centanarians.
we want sharp cognition at 120.
do eye tracking for dementia.

BK... healthspan is a more coherent argument...

interventions in mice do work says Brian K... do extend max lifespan.

huge audience response to how many want to live to 150...majority in our audience.

BK wants to be bored at the age of 150 and not demented at age 80...

Aubrey... may get escape velocity....

Sonia...
aud Q how abt massive simulation of human body to simulate the entire thing
Will Eden: NO! can't even do one protein in a folding model.

DK data collection... what do u do with all that data... how to make ti actionable.
eg a statin... look at pharmacogenetics... important for statin metabolism.

want to get VS in the field.

Lee Hood involved in this...

eat less and be more active says tom rando...
easy but people do NOT do it even tho its easy.at

Aubrey the magnitude of benefit is not v great...

look at USA vs Japan... we spend huge amts in USA and get nothing

Japan... they eat less... 5 year diff btwn USA and Japan!

can we really mount a strong argument against it... say for drinking and eating...

yes u can for smoking...and saving for retirement says Tom Rando...

people are bad ... at making LT decisions

*

lets do rapid fire...

bio FICO score...

epigenetic clock says tom rando... lots of people doing it.
(tom really believes in the power of epigenetics.. lifestyle to modigy genetic expression)
lots of work doing that..

how big a role does CR play...

it works in MICE says Joe McCracken.

extend life of rodents by 50% (this was initially done perhaps 80 yrs ago.)

but CR works less in people that are already long lived...

who should do moonshot projects...? (that take ten years or more)
Will... do other than VCs... should high net worth.. people ; or corporate VCs
tens of billions; soverign wealth funds. huge issue.
better than VCs...
.
DK will go to Whitehouse cancer conference (Biden conf) on CA moonshot...

mental health... depression is a big driver of unhealthy choices

best to give them hope... give them a plan...

next Q: supplements:... you don't know what's in the supplement
because now it's caveat emptor.
fish oil and vit E perhaps work says DK...

what is Calico research revealing? can't say... stealth..
