Whittaker, Steve Memory Total Recall
<p>Apr 22, 2010 6:16 PM  STEVE WHITTAKER )clean shave,  color shirt like Hawaii, longish gray hair)

mentions  Gordon Bell and Jim GEH mul.

he shows  shells in a bottle that Mum and kids collect on their beach vacations ... memento.

heat and motion sensor, takes a pic q30secs in Gordons system.

Never miss a thing.
People hate throwing stuff out... their pack rats... averse to loss of data.

all throw away 17% of  digi fotos  (even the ones that are blurred and redundant)
only throw away 22% of email and paper records... throw away only 22%.

Ebbinghaus  100 years ago  showed the forgetting curve of OM =  ORGANIC MEMORY
sharp fall off over a few mins for verbal  info,  falling almost to zero.

in  a life time  record  6 GB of  text
1500 G of  video
about  1.5  *  1015  bytes altogether.

Kahneman and Tversky  in  79
people startegy wrt to  th5rowing  stuff out is to defer   in order to keep
info of potential value.

Systems for Life Logging  MEMEX,,  REQALL,  Eyetap,  Stuff I've Seen

SenseCam study...  does it actually help people to remember stuff
(having the sense cam images q30 seconds)
Surprise  answer ...  NO...  only increments by ONE EVENT... it is not helpful.

compared 4 modes
a) snapshots  SNAPS  b)  tracks and snaps   (with GPS)  see where u were.
and OM  organic MEM.

Remember means:  C U in my minds eye
Know...  I  must've been there or done that.
I'm really not sure.

How about looking at a LifeLog  pic  to discover details once you know what event u want to find.

Images may be useful for microevents  (length of hair etc)
Memory is reconstructed  (Schacter 96)

So,  first study showed  LifeLog is not really useful for rememberins stuff.

STUDY 2:  Will people actually use it.

Determinants;  1)quality of ur own memory.  If ur OM is bad, then want  Lifelog to help
2)  System must be really easy to use... EFFICIENT

OM  is not accurate but is efficient
Pen/Paper is not accur but efficient
dictaphone is  accurate but not efficient
ChittyChatty is  accurate and efficient

People prefer paper and pen to dictaphone;

DATA GLUT  means  efficiency is really impt.

Memory is selective and ADAPTIVE  to situation  (Andersona and Schooler  91)
RECENCY AND PRIMACY;

we remember events that are  useful and are important.

ATTN based;  want indices of attention to know when to record.
eg if subj. is taking notes then its import.
taking a pic means its impt.

Content-based semantic analysis

EVENT SELECTION
hand written annotations  (this is important)
click on anote and get the whole thing and audio.

pix of lecture as keys to index lecture;

given an exam students do use it.

Kalnikaite and Whittaker  2008...
use  most popular  pix (of lecture) and most popular notes to index it.

eg  look at a social summary of Star Wars movie...  what do people like to watch.

peak at opening scene;  peak at Pricess Leia  us are only hope Obe Wan
peak at duel with lite sabers etc.

What r determinants of people using a memory system like Lifelogs
a)  if the quality of their OM is bad
b)  is system is  accurate , efficient, ez to use.

SCANNING a document...
summarize it by just displaying key words where they are
(words that are FREQ in the document but NOT freq in English)
'if user clicks it, then display more detail.

Indexing needs to be adaptive.

Chitty Chatty.

I say  USE emotiona valence  + or -;

Where did I leave the keys or where did I leave the car.
devices to keep audio.

I say...  prob. will get special purpose devices for each type of situation:
eg lectures,  conversations,  out in nature,  in a city etc.
he says ... yeah but if altogeteher then easier to x index.
