According to the Book of Joshua, the walls of Jericho collapse following an elaborate ritual, and with God's aid, the Israelites begin a rapid and brutal conquest of the Promised Land. However, the Book of Judges tells a very different story. While Joshua describes the total destruction or displacement of the native Canaanite population, Judges presents a slow, difficult process of settlement marked by setbacks, incomplete victories, and ongoing Canaanite presence. In this lecture, we will examine archaeological and historiographical evidence to understand why the biblical tradition preserves these two conflicting accounts. What really happened at Jericho? What is the significance of the ritual in Joshua that brings down the walls? And why did this story matter to ancient Israel?
