Transparent and Mini Mode

Mini Mode and Transparent Mode were introduced in version 6.0.

Mini Mode reduces the plex to just show the active thought and the search box.

Transparent mode makes thoughts and applications available "through" the plex, effectively making the plex part of your desktop.

In 7.x the icon in the left corner of TheBrain was changed from transparency mode to a toggle to show the plex full screen. Transparency mode can still be accessed from Window > Transparent Mode. Clicking on the Title bar in Transparent mode will turn it into Mini Mode.

The window can be dragged around by the PB icon above the active thought. Although you can't drag hyperlinks and files in to create child thoughts, you can drag them and attach them as attachments to the existing thought.

This functionality makes mini-mode a good choice when you need PersonalBrain to be unobtrusive, but still have the ability to add information your database. To do this, create a tag or thought as an "inbox" thought, and then drag files and hyperlinks as you work without disrupting your workflow. Later in the day, you can go back to the full screen view and drag the attachments out of the thought / tag to create individual thoughts from them, and then link and categorize as necessary (if you hold down the shift button as you link it to another thought it will unlink from the inbox thought automatically).

Note: As of 6.0.7.1 there is an issue dragging hyperlinks out of a tag thought. This is resolved in TheBrain 7.x.

When using Mini Mode, I've found it very helpful to create keyboard accelerators (Options > Preferences > Accelerators) for Thought > Open Thought window, and Edit > Open Notes window. It also helps to have a PersonalBrain Hot Key (at the top of the list), and a hotkey for Toggle Mini Mode.

If you have this setup, it's very easy to activate PersonalBrain using the hotkey, running an instant search to find a thought, activate it, and then use the accelerator to either view notes, or the attachment window. Or you can Shift + Enter to open an attachment directly.

I've found this has made mini-mode much more useful to me. I have PB sit unobtrusively in the top corner of my screen yet still have quick access to information without obscuring the documents I'm working with. Using the Toggle Mini Mode accelerator I can still quickly go back to the normal view if I need to navigate the plex, run reports, or do extended searches.
