Behaviour-based Safety BBS

Behaviour-based safety (BBS) is a Human Factors approach that focuses on identifying and modifying employee behaviours to improve workplace safety. It is based on the belief that human behaviour is a significant contributor to accidents and incidents, and that by understanding and influencing behavior, organizations can improve safety performance.

The main principles of behavior-based safety include:

  1. Observation and feedback: BBS involves systematically observing and recording employee behaviours related to safety. This can be done through direct observation, self-reporting, or through the use of technology such as wearable devices or video monitoring. Observers provide feedback to employees on their safety behaviours, both positive and negative.
  2. Positive reinforcement: BBS emphasizes positive reinforcement for safe behaviours. When employees demonstrate safe behaviours, they are recognized and rewarded, which reinforces those behaviours and encourages their continuation.
  3. Corrective feedback: If unsafe behaviours are observed, employees are provided with constructive feedback and encouraged to correct the behavior. The focus is on coaching and supporting employees to improve their safety practices.
  4. Employee involvement: BBS encourages active participation and involvement of employees in the safety process. Employees are often involved in setting safety goals, identifying hazards, and developing safety improvement initiatives.
  5. Data analysis: BBS relies on the analysis of behavioural data to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement. This data-driven approach helps organizations target specific behaviours and interventions to improve safety.
  6. Continuous improvement: BBS is an ongoing process of continuous improvement. As behaviours change and safety performance improves, the program evolves and adapts to new challenges and opportunities.

The success of a BBS program relies on effective leadership, employee engagement, and a strong safety culture that supports and reinforces safe behaviours at all levels of the organization.
