Repeater Hosting Requirements
Building Access
- To be arranged with the host based on their own security requirements.
Space Requirements
- Typical floor space of four feet square with no obstruction above it with an AC power plug no further than 10’ away.
- A means for coaxial cable to exit the building for the outside antenna installation.
Power Requirements
- 150 watts when transmitting much less when receiving
- Comment found on the web, less than a computer on 24/7 - last I measured it was about 180 watts per hour per computer.
- Comment you wouldn’t see the difference in the electric bill
- I have the means to measure actual power usage of an electrical appliance, I will put it to work.
Emergency Back Up Electricity
- Newer repeaters will naturally be running on 12 volt there for making it easy to provide backup power via a 12volt battery system.
- Each repeater system has their own backup requirements.
Environmental Consideration
- A room normally equipped with other communication equipment will be suitable to support the amateur radio repeater. No other environmental changes required.
- An alternative location may be a wall mounted environments equipment cabinet that can be provisioned.
Antenna Installation
- A Typical Antenna Installation will include a pole approximately 20-30 feet vertical to support a vertical antenna.
- These antenna are planned so that it will provide the maximum coverage for it's intended area while the priority will be to not affect any existing antennas with the same facility.
- An analysis of all frequencies in use at the repeater site to predict any possible impact to the radio systems already installed at the repeater site.
- Generally speaking, collocating a VHF (Very High Frequency) or UHF (Ultra High Frequency) will not create a problem to any existing microwave systems at the website.
- In the 80s and 90s the KH6JPL repeater system that provide the only communications between Oahu and Kauai, in the brunt of hurricane Iniki was collocated at the same site that provided the microwave links to Kauai
