Persecution and Apologists
Approximate timeframe
c. 150–313 CE
Christianity expanded throughout the Roman Empire while facing varying levels of local and imperial opposition. Apologists defended Christian belief before Greco-Roman audiences, and theologians such as Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, and Cyprian shaped early Christian thought.
Persecution was intermittent rather than constant across the entire empire.
