In 1951 I was born on a farm in Friesland. My parents moved to Rotterdam soon after. With this city as base camp, to which we returned each time, I also grew up in South Africa, and Canada.

I still remember: no phone, no television... only a small world receiver. And we wrote surface mail or airmail letters to family back home. It took weeks sometime to receive a reply.

Between 1970 and 1974 I studied Civil Engineering at the Hogere Technische School Rotterdam. No calculators or computers just a slide rule. That was complicated: like 8 times 8 is approximately 64 ...

1984 came along ... for Personal Computing I consider the eighties an exciting decade! Exploring Hypercard on the Mac for example was an adventure for me!

Many years later - in 2008 - I wrote some thoughts about these early days with Hypercard: on mouseUp!

Fast Forward to L2022: in many ways the world has changed! Yet - to me - in even more ways it is still the same old world, in which we imitate the world of paper documents. Except we use expensive little smart phones to send fragmented messages to each other ... scientists keep writing “papers” ... many websites still look like the brochures they keep dropping into our physical mailbox ...

So where do I find some authenticity in Cyberspace? That question brings along an interesting hobby... especially on cold, rainy days.
