Chapter 40: Heredity page 187-192

From page 188:

"....the essence of a gene is its DNA, a chemical mind, an intelligence in the very center of each cell taht instructs the body how to work. But when that mind goes crazy, when DNA is EVEN SLIGHTLY DAMAGED, the cells no longer have coherent orders to obey. They are OUT OF CONTROL. They destroy instead of build. They are diseased cells. THEY ARE CANCER."

"DNA can be damaged in a variety of ways. Nuclear RADIATION can do it. So can certain chemicals. But DNA can also start off somewhat damaged (or mutated) when a parent with a mutated, cancer-prone gene passes it on to his or her child."

"in a condition known as xerderma pigmentorium for instance, the mechanisms that fix environmentally INDUCED DAMAGE to DNA is skin cells DO NOT FUNCTION WELL. So a person with this malady is more likely to develop skin cancer from exposure to the sun's DNA damaging ultra-violet rays or to MEDICATIONS that work by ALTERNING DNA."

"Other genetic SYNDROMES with tongue-twisting names such as:

can cause cancer by ENCOURAGING mutation. These conditions cause chromosomes (strands of genes) to break easily in the presence of carcinogens, thus increasing the possibility of an abnormal re-combination."

Who is Fanconi?
