"Many Native American tribes recognize the special power and importance of SACRED CLOWNS, contraries, and tricksters, who learn their vocations from a vision or calling, from Great Spirit. As with clowns everywhere, the primary task of sacred clowns is to get people to laugh and lighten up. They act in unpredictable and unconventional ways in order to help free people from mental rigidity, even during sacred ceremonies or normally serious activities."
