Learning and wellbeing should not be viewed in isolates, both need to be valued as equal components to achieve positive outcomes for students. Students are more likely to learn effectively when classrooms feel safe, predictable, and supportive. Positive relationships developed within schools can strengthen students’ sense of connection and belonging, encouraging them to engage more effectively in their learning (Berry street, n.d.).The Berry street Education Model promotes a trauma – informed approach that recognise how trauma and feeling unsafe can significantly affect students’ behaviour, emotional regulation, engagement and academic outcomes. The model supports a whole school approach that places students’ wellbeing alongside teaching and learning (Berry street, n.d.).
Pedagogy alone does not meet the needs of all learners. Effective pedagogy should be supported by a system that enables the early identification of students requiring additional assistance before they experience failure. The Multitiered System of Supports (MTSS) considers more than how teaching is delivered in classrooms but also focuses on how individual learners can be supported. MTSS uses three triers of increasingly targeted support, allowing additional assistance to be implemented according to each learners’ individual learners needs (Australian Education Research Organisation [AERO], 2026)
The Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan conveys that supporting aboriginal and Torres Striate Islander students requires more than effective classroom teaching. Positive outcomes are also supported by culturally inclusive learning environments that focus on the wider communities needs as this can strengthen the students sense of belonging. When students feel culturally safe, respected and valued, this can improve their engagement, attendance and their educational outcomes (Department of Education and Training, 2016)
