Lead/Lag during turns

northerly heading: lag

the compass will lag or be behind the airplane

southerly heading: lead

it will lead or run ahead of the airplane

latitude matters

Both lead and lag vary with the latitude where the turn is made.

An average for the lower 48 states is about 30 degrees maximum, which decreases uniformly as the airplane approaches east and west headings.
