Conventional STAR
STAR (aka "arrival")
- a bridge between the enroute structure and the destination
- simplified clearance delivery (it's defined, not unique per flight plan)
- usually terminate with an approach procedure
- officially begins at the navaid or fix where all the transitions to the arrival converge
- named for that fix (see above)
- numbered 1-9 (reverts to 1 after reaching 9); increments with significant change in:
- altitude
- route
- data concerning a fix
- naming convention: transition.star#
LAX.HUBRD1
Los Angeles transition to the HUBRD 1 Arrival
- initial fixes correspond to the enroute chart
- flight plans can indicate "NO STAR" in remarks
- routes between fixes contain:
- course (degrees)
- distance
- minimum altitude
- STAR arrival can be declined (e.g., no chart available)
Transition
- one of several routes that bring traffic from different directions into one STAR
- usually named for the fix or navaid where they begin (LAX in the STAR above: LAX.HUBRD1)
