quiz questions

alternate airport required in 2 scenarios

  1. no IAP at destination
  2. weather (1 hr before to 1 hr after: 2000' ceiling + 3 SM visibility)

Fuel

If no alternate is filed/required, carry enough fuel to land or continue for another 45 min [airplanes; 30 min heli] at normal cruising speed.

If you are flying an airplane in IFR conditions you must carry enough fuel to:

  1. Reach your destination airport
  2. Fly from there to an alternate (if an alternate is required)
    1. Still have 45 minutes [30 heli] reserve fuel (at normal cruising airspeed) after reaching the alternate.

selection of an alternate for flight planning

Wx for alternate airport destination (at ETA, not 1 hr before + 1 hr after)

Precision approach (LPV and LNAV/VNAV do not qualify)

  • 600' ceiling
  • 2 SM visibility

Non-Precision

  • 800' ceiling
  • 2 SM visibility

No IAP

  • VFR conditions

Alternate minimums

note cannot say NA in the IAP

  • The landing minimums published for the type of procedure selected for an alternate are still valid. Alternate minimums are for filing only and are not relevant to landing at that airport;

GPS non-WAAS certified nav gear

Must have

  • another supported IAP which does not use GPS/WAAS at both the destination and the alternate (if one is required)
  • must have wx minimums for non-precision approach (even though GPS/WAAS is considered precision)
