Cutting-edge gene editing tools such as Crispr-Cas9 work by using a synthetic ribonucleic acid (RNA) to cut into DNA strands and then insert, alter or remove targeted traits. These might, for example, distort the sex-ratio of mosquitoes to effectively wipe out malarial populations.

Topic: De-Extinction of the Thylacine (Tazmanian Tiger)
| Recall | Notes |
| Is the Thylacine truly extinct? |
- Some farmers and scientist have reported sitings over the years, but no absolute proof Since 1930.
- Farming, wild dogs and hunting were the main factors for it’s extinction.
|
| Can the Thylacine be brought back? |
- Recent studies suggest that the DNA can be recreated.
- Crisper technology had succeeded in several test runs, but have not yet completed a successful living specimen.
- Other, closely related species still exist and can easily be used as a host parent.
|
| Should the Thylacine be brought back? |
- Rabbit and other invasive species are currently inhabiting 70% of Southern Australia where the Thylacine once thrived.
- Burrowing causes erosion, destroys farmland and native plant life. Threaten other native species
- Attempts to fix the issue of the invasive rabbits have thus far been unsuccessful.
- Understanding this technology could benefit other species in the future.
|
| Summary | The environment would benefit from re-introducing the Thylacine to it’s native habitat. |
