Self-directed Neuroplasticity

Self-directed neuroplasticity refers to our ability to intentionally and purposefully change the neural "wiring" in our brains through focused attention. For example, any time we learn a new skill or successfully adopt a new habit, we have exercised our ability to use, and benefit from, the power of self-directed neuroplasticity.

In this context, it is important to note that for many years it was thought that the capacity for neural change within the brain would diminish after childhood. However, current research has clearly demonstrated that neural changes within the brain occur throughout our lifetimes ~ and, even more importantly, we now know that thought alone is capable of changing the brain.
