Edmond Dantes
The protagonist of the story. Edmond is the first mate of the Pharaon. His character is above reproach. He is innocent---and naive in a sense. He is framed for a crime he did not commit, and when he realizes this his thoughts turn to vengeance. He is loyal to those who tried to help him.
He perseveres through the most difficult of times.
He gains a tremendous amount of knowledge through his friendship with fellow prisoner Abbe Faria.
