Telomeres

Telomeres

Telomeres are structures found at the end of chromosomes, which are the structures that carry genetic information in cells. Telomeres protect the genetic material of the chromosome by acting as a kind of cap or buffer, preventing the loss or damage of genetic material during cell division.

Telomeres consist of repeating nucleotide sequences, and are made up of DNA and associated proteins. In most cells, the telomeres shorten with each round of cell division, eventually reaching a point where they become so short that they can no longer protect the chromosome. This can lead to chromosomal instability, which can in turn cause a variety of health problems.

There is evidence to suggest that telomere length may be associated with a number of different health outcomes, including aging and age-related diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Some research has also suggested that lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress management may be able to affect telomere length and potentially impact overall health and longevity.
