Merensky Timber
Merensky supplies Pine and Eucalyptus timber to South African, African, and international markets. With over 65,000 hectares of plantations across South Africa, our operations are among the largest privately-managed saw-log plantations in the country. Lumber is processed at our own sawmills and supplied directly or from depots located in Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg, and Cape Town.
Eucalyptus Timber
Merensky is recognized as the pioneer of commercially-grown sawlog-rotation Eucalyptus. Decades of continuous genetic improvements have resulted in world-class lumber. Sawlog-plantation Eucalyptus is a sustainable alternative to dwindling tropical hardwood supplies. Kiln-dried hardwood lumber is produced at Merensky’s Northern Timbers sawmill in Tzaneen, primarily for joinery and furniture manufacture.
Softwood Processing
Merensky’s softwood processing operation, Singisi Forest Products, comprises three sawmills strategically located in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. These mills produce quality sawn and kiln-dried Pine lumber for construction, furniture, joinery, and other uses. All structural lumber is graded in accordance with South African National Standards (SANS).
Advanced Facilities
A world-class optimizing drymill has been established at the Kliprivier business park near Alberton in Gauteng. This facility features specialized equipment that non-destructively grades structural lumber to required specifications and can produce finger-joint lumber in any lengths.
Certification
All Merensky-grown lumber carries the prestigious Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification. Within the Group, there are two Forest Management (FM) Certificates:

Our History
Merensky was founded in 1949 by Dr. Hans Merensky. Born in Botshabelo in 1871, Dr. Merensky became a legend in his time—a world-famous prospector and geologist, humanitarian, and visionary devoted to nature, afforestation, and agriculture.
In a brilliant career spanning nearly 50 years, Dr. Merensky achieved international recognition as an outstanding analytical geologist. His major discoveries of platinum, diamonds, chrome, gold, and phosphate ores are well-remembered, and his conservation work left a lasting legacy.
By establishing a Trust in 1949, Dr. Merensky aimed to perpetuate his work on Westfalia Estate’s agricultural, horticultural, and forestry resources. The Trust, which became the Hans Merensky Foundation in 1973, ensures the continuation of his efforts in water and soil conservation, soil revitalization, and staff welfare. The Foundation provides bursaries for education and training, and grants and loans for research in fields including forestry and agriculture. Dr. Merensky passed away in October 1952.
