Project Cypress
Named for the cypress trees that clean our air and guard the Gulf Coast, Project Cypress is a feat of engineering that removes excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to protect our planet from the worst of climate change. The Project combines Direct Air Capture technology and proven geologic storage capacities with a talented local workforce, to make Southwest Louisiana a leader in deploying a new generation of clean industry.
Direct Air Capture (or DAC) is a technology that removes carbon dioxide directly from the air. The expert and industry consensus is that DAC has become an urgent necessity to help limit climate change by removing legacy carbon emissions already in the atmosphere as well as those emissions that are difficult to avoid in hard-to-abate sectors.
Unlike carbon capture, which is situated at a point source, like a factory or power plant smokestack, and prevents emissions from entering the atmosphere (emissions reductions), DAC removes CO2 that has already been emitted into the atmosphere directly from the air (carbon dioxide removal). None of the CO2 Project Cypress removes will be used to enable fossil fuel extraction through methods like enhanced oil recovery.
