REDD+
Overview
REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, plus conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) is a framework under the UNFCCC that provides incentives to developing countries to reduce emissions from forests and increase forest carbon stocks.
Key Elements
- Countries implement national policies and measures to address drivers of deforestation and forest degradation.
- Performance is measured against forest reference emission levels or reference levels.
- Results are subject to monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and can receive results-based payments from climate finance sources (e.g., the Green Climate Fund and bilateral donors).
Role in Carbon Markets & Climate Finance
- Provides the conceptual and methodological basis for many forest carbon projects and jurisdictional programmes in both compliance and voluntary markets.
- Closely linked to standards such as Verra’s VCS (REDD+ methodologies) and to integrity debates and reforms (e.g., over-crediting concerns).
