We introduce the notion of the transpose of a matrix, give some properties, and relate it to the dot product of vectors.

00:00

hello everyone I'm Norman Weber today we

00:02

talk about transposes and inverses so

00:05

these are important operations on

00:07

matrices so it transposes act on any

00:15

sized matrix while inverses are only

00:26

defined for square matrices that means

00:38

ie matrices that are n by n matrices

00:43

okay so we want to talk about these two

00:45

different kinds of transformations the

00:49

inverses are more complicated and

00:52

important but transposes act in some

00:55

ways a little bit like inverses so it's

00:57

good to start with them all right so

00:59

what is the transpose of matrix well

01:02

it's a kind of a reflection so the

01:04

transpose of the matrix is described in

01:10

terms of its size if a is an M by n

01:13

matrix then it's transpose and usually

01:23

denoted a with a superscript capital T

01:27

is an N by M matrix the rows of a become

01:40

the columns of a transpose and

01:47

vice-versa so let's give an example so

01:55

if a is the matrix site 2 1 3 4 - 6 17

02:03

then a transpose is the matrix - 1 3 4 -

02:12

6:17 so you can see that the rows of a

02:15

becomes the columns of a transpose while

02:18

the columns of a become the rows of a

02:22

transpose and a is a two by three matrix

02:25

while a transpose is a three by two

02:28

matrix that's quite simple and if we

02:34

wanted to describe it in terms of

02:36

entries so an official definition might

02:38

be is that if a equals say the matrix

02:43

with entries little a IJ okay is M by n

02:51

matrix then a transpose is the N by M

03:00

matrix where the IJ entry of a transpose

03:08

is a ji in other words it's the J entry

03:19

of a alright that's a concise way of

03:25

describing the relationship between the

03:28

entries of the matrix a and the entries

03:31

of the transpose basically interchanging

03:34

properties first of all that it's linear

03:39

if a and B are both matrices of the same

03:43

size then a plus B transpose is a

03:47

transpose plus B transpose so here if a

03:50

and B are both the same size say m by n

03:57

and secondly then if we take lambda

04:01

times a and we take the transpose of

04:05

that so if we multiply all the entries

04:07

by five well then kind of obviously the

04:11

transpose of that is going to be lambda

04:14

times the transpose of a

04:19

but a more subtle property is the

04:21

following that if a is M by N and B is n

04:29

by P then in that case we're allowed to

04:34

multiply them because this end and that

04:36

end are the same okay so then if we

04:40

multiply a times B and take the

04:44

transpose of that what we get is the

04:49

transpose of B times the transpose of a

04:59

so when we take transpose as the order

05:03

interchanges and that makes sense at the

05:06

level of sizes because if we look at the

05:11

sizes of things a B itself is a B is

05:16

going to be an M by P so a B transpose

05:21

is P by M and on the right hand side B

05:29

transpose is P by n just reverse these

05:33

ones and a transpose is n by M reverse

05:39

these ones so B transpose times a

05:43

transpose is now these ends here also

05:47

agree but the other elements so we get P

05:52

by M so this dimension of a B transpose

05:59

agrees with the dimension of B transpose

06:02

times a transpose okay so let's see if

06:09

we can prove this we improve the third

06:10

with the first two almost like exercises

06:13

but the third one is a little bit

06:14

trickier so let's prove this third

06:17

property prove three so a is M by N and

06:22

B is n by P so let's have a look at the

06:28

IJ entry

06:31

of a B transpose in IJ entry of a B

06:37

transpose by definition that's equal to

06:40

the J I entry of the product a B that's

06:48

the definition of the transpose now what

06:57

is the ji entry of a B so I remind you

07:01

that a is we're assuming it's M by N and

07:04

B is n by P so this is jit entry it's

07:12

the sum from k equals 1 to N of the the

07:23

J caithe entry of a times the K I entry

07:31

of b-but this is then also equal to sum

07:39

from k equals 1 to n I will write it

07:42

with the B's first be ki a JK and then

07:51

I'm going to write this as the ki

07:56

element of B is the same as the I cave

08:01

element of B transpose and a sub J k is

08:07

the KJ element of a transpose and when

08:15

we write it that way now we see that

08:17

this is the altogether it's equal to the

08:23

IJ entry of B transpose times a

08:27

transpose

08:30

because there's a common index there and

08:34

there and the outside indices are I and

08:36

J and we're talking about the matrices B

08:40

transpose and a transpose so that's the

08:44

computation that shows that the

08:46

transpose satisfies this pleasant

08:51

doesn't condition up here now when we

08:53

take the transpose of a product we get

08:55

the product of the transpose is but in

08:57

the opposite order now another role for

09:02

transposes is to have a look at the dot

09:07

product in matrix language so the dot

09:11

product of vectors in matrix language so

09:22

we now have an opportunity of sort of

09:23

rethinking what the dot product of

09:26

vectors is so I remind you that if you

09:29

have two vectors say if a is an element

09:33

in n-dimensional space that means it's a

09:39

column vector of length or size N and B

09:49

is also in RN then we can define the dot

09:53

product then a dot B is is a number okay

10:00

and more specifically if a is equal to a

10:06

one down to a n and B is be one down to

10:13

BN

10:14

then I remind you that the dot product

10:17

of these two vectors is the sum a 1 B 1

10:20

plus all the way up to a and BN alright

10:26

coming from vector geometry now we can

10:32

interpret column vectors as matrices so

10:37

about a column vector

10:42

in say RN can be viewed as an n by 1

10:55

matrix right this vector here is

11:04

essentially a matrix with n rows and one

11:08

column now similarly a row vector a row

11:16

vector which typically we usually write

11:19

may be something like the one comma V 2

11:25

comma V n so this is what a row vector

11:28

looks like this can be interpreted or

11:34

recast as 1 by n matrix okay in that

11:43

case we write rather write without

11:47

commas when we write matrices we

11:53

generally do not have commas so we would

11:55

write this row vector rather as V 1 V 2

11:58

V 2 V 2 up to VN without any columns so

12:11

this way both row vectors and column

12:13

vectors candies are brought into the

12:15

realm of matrices with column vectors

12:20

being n by 1 matrices and row vectors as

12:25

being 1 by n matrices so now if we look

12:30

at our two original column vectors so a

12:36

equals a 1 down to a n and B equals B 1

12:43

through B n then let's have a look at

12:46

this following product when we take a

12:50

transpose times B

12:55

so the transpose of a will be the row

12:59

vector a 1 up to a an ax B is the column

13:04

vector B 1 down to BN and when we

13:08

multiply them we're getting a 1 B 1 plus

13:15

all the way up to a n BN actually we're

13:21

getting that as a 1 by 1 matrix but if

13:24

we don't bother with the brackets denote

13:28

the 1 by 1 matrix then we can interpret

13:31

this as just the dot product of a and B

13:35

so we've make established proposition is

13:42

that if a and B are column vectors both

13:56

n-dimensional then the dot product

14:01

between them he is just a transpose

14:07

times B
