Hegel vs Marx

Hegel vs Marxhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tvuWwOgk0YA short clip of Peter Singer and Bryan Magee discussing Hegel and Marx. The original video quality wasn't the best, so I just added my own visuals. In any case, the whole discussion can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9SUY...

As a young or left Hegelian, Marx adopted much of Hegel's system. However, one important difference is that Marx substituted a kind of materialism for Hegel's idealism. As such, Marx privileged the material conditions over mind and ideas. This meant that rather than ideas underlying society and driving historical change, it was the material and economic conditions which determine ideas, culture, and historical change.

00:00I think it's very striking after the00:01whole of our discussion up to this point00:03to list the fundamental ideas of a00:07galleon ISM that we've talked about00:09which Marx simply took over and00:12incorporated into Marxism among these00:14are first the idea that reality is a00:18historical process second that this00:21process changes by a dialectical00:26movement dialectical change historical00:29dialectic third that it's all going00:33towards a goal fourth that that goal is00:37a conflict-free Society and fifth that00:40until we get there to the conflict free00:43society00:44we're condemned to remain in one form or00:46another than alienation00:48now all these absolutely central ideas00:51of Marxism were taken over lock stock00:54and barrel from Hegel one has to say00:59that there's one huge difference and01:01it's this that whereas Hegel as we've01:05been saying all along was an idealist01:06and to Hegel all these things were seen01:09as happening to mind or spirit to Geist01:12as you said in the case of Mars he saw01:16all these things as happening to01:17something material Marx was a01:19materialist but the whole pattern of01:22ideas remains the same it's as if Marx01:24has taken over a great long set of01:27equations from Hegel substituted a01:31different value for X in the equations01:33matter instead of mind but kept the01:37whole set of equations in every other01:39respect the same that's right and you01:41can see it for instance in Marx's01:43materialist conception of history the01:45key thing in Marx's thought where01:47history develops by the economic base01:51the material side the forces of01:53production as dominating the mental so01:57that our ideas our religion our politics01:59all flow from the kind of economic02:04structure that we have in our society02:06and that's an inversion of Hegel's idea02:09as Marx himself said he stood Hegel on02:11his head because for Hegel it was the02:13element of ideas of ideas of freedom and02:15so on that led to the formation of02:18particular societies in particular02:20historical epochs
