<div id="description" class="style-scope ytd-video-secondary-info-renderer">We continue with an innovative approach to early mathematics education! This series is meant for teachers and parents of children in early primary school (K-6) to orient them to beginning mathematics education. It is also of potential interest to lay people wanting to strengthen their understanding of what mathematics is about by going right back to the basics of arithmetic, geometry and logic with real life applications. In this video we introduce the idea of weighing everyday objects, which goes back at least to ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian times. These days we use the metric (grams and kilograms) and imperial (ounces and pounds) unit systems. This arena directly connects arithmetic with actual important applications, making it easier for young learners to gain intuition and experience with numbers and their elementary operations of addition and multiplication. We also gain experience with the science of measuring, using scales and reading approximate quantities. Measuring and counting are two different aspects of arithmetic, and while they have common features, there are also notable distinctions.</div>
