We continue our new approach to solving polynomial equations via power series which finesses the classical dependence on radicals. We look at how to obtain two solutions to the general quadratic, and then move to the much more challenging case of the general cubic equation.

00:01

hello everyone i'm norman wahlberger and

00:03

thanks for joining me

00:04

on this exploration of research level

00:07

mathematics

00:07

we are looking at solving polynomial

00:09

equations very classical subject

00:11

in a potentially new way so last time we

00:15

were looking at the quadratic equation

00:16

and we wrote it as t plus c one x

00:20

plus c two x squared equals zero and we

00:21

got these two solutions x1 and x2

00:24

through a method of a kind of a power

00:26

series method proceeding step by step

00:28

solving some equations so we have a

00:31

power series in

00:32

t here with coefficients which uh

00:35

little functions of c1 and c2 and then

00:38

there's also these numbers which are the

00:40

catalan numbers

00:42

c n is 1 over n plus 1 times the

00:45

binomial coefficient 2

00:48

n choose n and we had two solutions

00:51

the second one a little bit more

00:53

complicated than the first one

00:54

due to this additional sort of constant

00:58

term

00:59

but otherwise actually they're very

01:00

similar this wasn't just sort of the

01:01

negative of

01:02

of this one here okay so what we want to

01:05

do today is we want to

01:06

wrap up this quadratic case and move

01:10

to the cubic case which is a lot more

01:13

challenging

01:14

okay so i want to rewrite this x1

01:17

as well in terms of uh

01:20

more sort of standard mathematical

01:22

notation involving summation

01:25

so let's rewrite

01:32

there it is as the summation

01:35

okay x1 equals so there's going to be

01:38

well there's a minus sign let's pull

01:40

that out and then there's a summation

01:41

sign

01:42

and maybe we'll use the dummy variable k

01:46

so k is going to go say from one one

01:48

will be the

01:49

exponent of t so k goes starting from

01:51

one in this case going up to

01:53

a nine okay and what

01:56

are we actually doing well there's a

01:59

power of t

02:00

so t to the k and then in front of that

02:03

there's some coefficients uh there's

02:05

first of all

02:06

a catalan number and

02:09

so we decided that 42 was the fifth one

02:13

uh fifth catalan number and so

02:16

that's corresponding to the t to the

02:18

sixth term so probably we should put

02:20

c k minus 1 here all right

02:23

and then there's also this quotient of

02:26

of c's so there's some power of c

02:29

sub 2 on the top and some power of c

02:33

sub 1 on the bottom let's figure out

02:35

what these powers are

02:36

so in case uh say here when k is two

02:40

then the power of c2 is one one less

02:44

and that's carrying on the power of c2

02:47

is always one less than the power of t

02:49

so

02:49

we should put up here the exponent k

02:53

minus 1. and what about the denominator

02:56

this power of c1 they are all odd powers

02:58

so the power here should be 2 to the

03:01

something

03:01

minus 1 or plus 1. say 2 to the k

03:06

in case k is 3 we're going to get

03:09

the power of 5. so we should choose 2

03:11

times k

03:12

minus 1 it looks like

03:16

all right and let's just check that

03:18

let's see what we

03:19

have in the way of um definition so we

03:22

have

03:22

cn right and these ones we don't care

03:25

about

03:27

so let's just evaluate this thing

03:32

and just compare minus t over c one

03:35

minus t squared c two c one cubed so

03:38

scientific workplace arranges the terms

03:41

here a little bit differently from what

03:42

we've got but it's the same

03:43

and the last one 14 thirty t to the nine

03:46

c

03:47

two to the eighth divided by c one to

03:49

the seventeen that looks like a good

03:50

formula

03:52

okay what about our x two

03:54

[Music]

03:55

well that was much the same so it was

03:56

really the negative of what we got up

03:58

here so we should just put that without

04:00

a negative sign this time

04:01

and then we should throw in this

04:03

additional constant term minus

04:05

c1 over c2 we'll put that out front with

04:08

a plus sign

04:10

and we'll check that okay what's that

04:13

evaluate

04:15

do we get the same thing oh here's the

04:16

minus c1 c2 okay

04:18

you can move it over there if we prefer

04:21

and then

04:22

otherwise it looks uh much the same as

04:24

this

04:26

okay so that's for um

04:29

going up to sort of level nine or degree

04:31

nine and

04:32

in general we like to write well we want

04:35

to write some more general formula

04:37

so we'll write x one

04:43

equals this thing here and instead of

04:45

having a 9 i'll just put

04:47

a plus sign which is my way of

04:50

indicating that we have

04:54

on series okay series which are ongoing

04:59

but we are definitely not pretending

05:01

that we are summing all of these things

05:03

to infinity absolutely not okay that's

05:06

that's a an arithmetic that's not

05:08

allowed in proper

05:10

thinking despite the fact that it's

05:12

commonplace in modern pure mathematics

05:14

a very sad story okay so we're not

05:16

pretending that

05:17

this is this is an expression okay which

05:20

is

05:21

something like a polynomial or a poly

05:23

number

05:24

but it has an additional aspect and

05:26

ultimately we'll have to describe

05:27

you know how the arithmetic of such

05:29

things work but crucially that

05:31

arithmetic is going to be

05:33

finitely specifiable and finitely

05:36

checkable okay that's the crucial

05:39

distinction here

05:40

okay and there's also the of course the

05:42

other one

05:44

that's x2

05:47

there it is there and we should go up

05:51

to nine we'll just keep on going

05:55

okay and just a note so you know

05:57

eventually

05:58

we will interpret

06:01

these once we have

06:05

proven this formula for these formulas

06:12

in some kind of in some kind of

06:16

truncated algebra

06:20

of on series okay but we're just

06:23

exploring right now so we don't have to

06:25

nail everything down we just want to get

06:27

some formulas

06:28

and uh and then stare at them and you

06:30

know and contemplate them

06:32

but right now we have some really nice

06:33

formulas for the quadratic case

06:36

and i do want to emphasize that we have

06:38

not yet proven these so

06:40

what we've done is we've made some

06:41

calculations going up to degree five

06:44

up to degree nine and certainly those

06:47

calculations suggest some kind of

06:48

general formula like this but

06:51

it's still a question to be proven okay

06:54

and those of you with some mathematical

06:56

uh experience

06:58

will be able to prove them okay so you

07:00

may want to sort of delve into just

07:02

proving these things

07:02

without any reference to the usual

07:04

classical formula

07:06

the quadratic formula just starting with

07:08

algebra and of course

07:10

employing properties of the catalan

07:12

numbers because they're central objects

07:14

in this story

07:17

fabulous okay now it's time to move on

07:20

to the cubic case

07:28

okay the cubic case so

07:31

here is our general cubic equation

07:34

t plus c one x plus c two x squared plus

07:38

c

07:38

three x cubed equals zero where again

07:41

we're

07:42

using t instead of c 0 because we're

07:45

going to follow

07:46

the rather successful row that we travel

07:49

down with our

07:50

quadratic case where we're going to

07:51

expand things in powers of t

07:54

and we're going to solve this for x

07:57

hopefully

07:59

and maybe you will try the same kind of

08:02

story we'll just

08:03

write x as some unknown power series in

08:06

t

08:07

and we'll choose say going up to degree

08:10

7

08:10

a little bit more than five but less

08:12

than nine so it's a compromise

08:14

and we'll see what happens when we plug

08:16

this thing into this equation

08:18

and see if we can find out what the a

08:20

i's are in terms of the

08:22

c's okay so there's a condition here so

08:26

subject

08:26

to the condition that

08:31

t to the eight equals zero

08:34

we want to solve for

08:37

a for it let's say the

08:41

a sub i's

08:45

in terms of c1

08:48

c 2 and c

08:52

  1. okay

08:55

are we ready to do that okay let's have

08:56

a look so here we'll take

08:59

t plus c one x plus c two

09:02

x squared plus c three x cubed okay

09:06

and we'll write it again and now we're

09:08

going to replace the x here

09:10

with this expression

09:17

okay and we'll just copy this thing and

09:20

i'll put it

09:21

here and i'll also

09:26

put it here okay

09:29

let's expand this whole thing so it's

09:30

got cubic terms so there'll be lots of

09:32

terms i just want to show you what that

09:33

actually looks like

09:34

so let's expand this out

09:39

to give you a sense of the power of

09:43

these kinds of programs okay it's

09:44

absolutely fabulous what they can do

09:47

with polynomial arithmetic and that's

09:49

absolutely crucial if you're

09:51

an amateur mathematician wanting to do

09:55

experimentation exploration in

09:58

mathematics you

09:59

you have to deal with polynomials and

10:01

matrices those are the

10:02

the main kinds of arithmetic that go

10:05

beyond our

10:06

usual arithmetic of numbers okay so

10:09

polynomial arithmetic matrix arithmetic

10:12

those are your two

10:13

fundamental arithmetical tools

10:16

okay and that's pretty well it people

10:18

you know it doesn't

10:19

it really doesn't get much more than

10:22

that

10:23

i know there's all these fancy things

10:24

but ultimately they come down to those

10:26

two things

10:27

okay so that's all too much isn't it

10:30

right so

10:30

we are going to uh shortly remove this

10:33

but i'm going to

10:35

truncate this right because we've agreed

10:37

that t to the eight is zero so a lot of

10:39

these terms here like this one here with

10:40

t12 so i'm not going to go through

10:41

individually and kill them i'm going to

10:43

just use our power

10:44

series little tool okay so we're going

10:47

to expand this

10:48

number of terms let's say

10:52

8 powers of t

10:55

okay what do we get

11:01

okay there there's the equal sign we

11:03

look for the equal sign okay

11:04

this is the stuff that we had before and

11:06

i'm now about to um

11:08

to uh selectively

11:12

delete

11:14

that

11:18

delete it and now let's have a look at

11:22

what we've got

11:23

here in front of us the ota that

11:27

means that there's terms of degree eight

11:29

above that

11:31

okay so what we see is a constant term

11:35

a multiple of t a multiple of t squared

11:38

all the way down to a multiple of t

11:39

cubed t to the seven now

11:43

what do we have to do well we have to

11:45

set all of this equal to zero

11:48

so open up here

11:53

so we get

11:58

zero

12:02

zero equals all of this stuff

12:09

that's a polynomial in t of degree seven

12:12

all the terms all the coefficients had

12:14

better be

12:15

zero

12:19

so this gives us

12:24

a number of equations

12:29

okay and we'll write them down just like

12:31

we did before so this first one

12:34

is the constant term and while we're at

12:37

it we're going to factor that thing

12:40

that's the same thing that we did in the

12:42

quadratic case

12:44

and

12:50

that's going to be a zero in fact i'll

12:53

write just write it like that okay

12:55

and then

12:59

we'll write down the other ones and then

13:00

we'll stare at it okay and then there's

13:02

t coefficient of that

13:06

is zero so this first equation allows us

13:10

potentially at least to solve for a zero

13:13

okay and you see what's involved in

13:15

doing that there's two possibilities

13:17

a zero is going to be zero from this

13:19

factor or a 0 is going to be a

13:22

solution to this quadratic equation

13:25

it's a quadratic equation it's written a

13:27

bit funny let me

13:28

just write it a little bit more smoothly

13:31

put the linear term

13:32

there it's c1 plus a0

13:36

c2 plus a0 squared c3

13:39

so it's a quadratic equation with

13:41

constant terms c1

13:42

then c2 and then c3 so do we know how to

13:45

solve quadratic equations

13:47

well yes we do because we've just done

13:48

that okay so in principle we could write

13:50

down a solution for

13:52

a zero from this factor but it'd be a

13:55

lot simpler if we wrote down

13:57

the other solution which is that a0

13:59

equals zero so again there's going to be

14:01

this separation into these two cases the

14:03

simple cases when a

14:04

0 is 0 and the more complicated case is

14:07

when this

14:08

factor is 0.

14:17

okay what are the other ones um okay

14:19

anyway oh yes and so

14:20

by the time we've sort of decided what a

14:23

0 is

14:24

then this next equation that we've just

14:26

written down let's have a look at it

14:27

as an equation in the a's there's an a1

14:30

here there's an a0 there's an a1 here

14:32

and a0 and a1

14:33

so this is a linear equation in a1

14:37

that has an a0 involved so if we've

14:40

already

14:41

got a value for a0 we can simply solve

14:44

this equation because it's a linear

14:45

equation

14:46

in a1 okay and then the next one

14:49

is this thing here

14:54

equals zero and then the cubic one

15:02

and then the degree four one

15:08

these are getting a bit longer aren't

15:09

they the degree five one

15:12

[Music]

15:15

degree six one

15:22

okay we're just almost at the limits of

15:24

visibility here

15:26

and let's say this one here

15:31

and just to make it temporarily visible

15:33

i put a line break in there so that's

15:35

that one there

15:38

okay what are we going to do we want to

15:41

solve

15:43

this for a 0 a 1 a 2

15:46

up to a 7. so i'm actually going to go

15:49

back up to my earlier

15:52

work where at some point i wrote down a

15:53

list of the a i's i'm just going to

15:55

borrow that again so let's just copy

15:57

that

15:59

come back down okay

16:03

let's get rid of this

16:07

and i'll put these a's here

16:10

okay so let's solve this i'm going to

16:13

first copy this

16:19

and put it

16:23

and also there so just another copy

16:26

so this first one we're going to do the

16:28

simplest thing okay the simplest thing

16:30

is to agree that a0

16:32

is actually equal to zero a sub zero

16:36

equals zero okay so let's start

16:41

let's start with the possibility

16:44

for the case the case

16:47

a sub zero equals 0. all right

16:51

so that's included there so this a0

16:54

okay that this one is then redundant but

16:56

it doesn't matter and then we'll be able

16:58

to or the computer will be able to

16:59

successively solve for a1 and then this

17:01

next one has an a2 in it which is

17:03

appearing only linearly

17:05

and then the other things are a a1 and

17:07

a0

17:08

and then the next one has an a3 which is

17:10

appearing linearly

17:11

and so on so it should be a snap for the

17:14

computer to

17:15

solve each one of these sequentially and

17:18

to

17:19

make sure that it doesn't mess up i'm

17:21

going to put this back

17:22

as a one-line thing even though you

17:24

can't see it but it doesn't matter

17:25

because we're just going to ask the

17:26

computer

17:27

to solve this compute solve

17:30

oh i have to before i do that i should

17:32

copy this

17:34

we want going to solve a0 up to a7

17:38

because the last term is a7

17:41

okay now i have to put the cursor back

17:43

in here somewhere

17:44

anywhere it doesn't matter and now i'm

17:47

going to ask

17:49

our brilliant friend to

17:53

solve for a0 up to a7

17:56

okay you can do it

18:00

okay let's see what happens here we get

18:10

okay we get something here and

18:14

i'll get rid of the brackets

18:18

and maybe i'll get rid of the solution

18:23

and so we can see this maybe i will i

18:26

will put it um

18:28

a little bit more organized way so we

18:31

can

18:31

see them sequentially a3

18:37

we can see this is actually quite a lot

18:40

more

18:41

involved slash interesting than the

18:44

quadratic

18:45

case remember in the quadratic cases all

18:47

these a's turned out to be

18:49

uh so some power of c2 divided by some

18:52

power of c1 and it was rather

18:53

predictable

18:54

okay it's suddenly not so predictable at

18:58

all

18:58

these a i's are now polynomials

19:03

in the c1 c2 c3 with

19:06

also denominators the denominators are

19:09

powers of c one actually that is very

19:11

familiar

19:12

okay um but there's then these other

19:15

terms

19:16

and now if we actually stare at this for

19:18

a second you say but wait a minute

19:20

actually we see something that we

19:21

recognize

19:22

already have a look see if you can see

19:25

what we've

19:26

already seen before

19:30

[Music]

19:32

you see that the coefficients if you

19:33

just look down this first

19:35

column here where

19:39

the terms involved are just pure powers

19:41

of c2

19:43

we're getting 2 5 well 1 1 1 1

19:46

2 5 14 42 132 we recognize the catalan

19:49

numbers

19:50

so this is just what we've already

19:52

gotten before

19:54

and then there are some additional terms

19:56

that also involve

19:58

c3 so we note that

20:01

[Music]

20:02

that this extends the

20:05

quadratic solution

20:09

in that if

20:10

[Music]

20:12

if we set c sub 3

20:15

equal to zero in other words if we

20:18

reduce the equation from being a cubic

20:21

to a quadratic that all these other

20:24

terms will disappear and we'll just get

20:26

what we

20:27

got before we get

20:30

what we got before

20:39

okay so great now we can write down some

20:42

kind of solution

20:43

in the same kind of way that we did in

20:45

the quadratic case so let's go back up

20:47

to our expression for x

20:48

here it is here

20:54

and

21:00

we get a solution

21:06

x one say oh let's write it like this

21:09

x sub one equals okay the a

21:12

zero we said is equal to zero so we'll

21:14

eliminate that one

21:16

and then we'll copy these various ones

21:18

so there's a1

21:20

put that in there for that and a2

21:28

instead of this and a3

21:35

that one and a4 minus sign

21:41

oops sorry that was t cubed going this

21:45

way

21:48

and a5

21:55

and a6

22:04

and finally a7 maybe off the page a

22:08

little bit

22:12

okay and i'm going to define x1 to be

22:16

that

22:18

and just so we can see it let me wrap

22:20

this around so there is a solution

22:22

of our cubic which sort of has

22:26

one of the solutions to the quadratic

22:29

inside it if c3

22:31

is zero then we sort of reduce to the

22:34

previous quadratic equation um solution

22:36

with just the catalan numbers which are

22:38

the first

22:39

elements in each of these brackets but

22:41

for the cubic there's more

22:43

terms now but we're only going up to

22:44

degree seven so

22:46

i want to check whether this actually

22:48

works okay so we want to

22:50

constantly use opportunities to check

22:53

that what we've done is correct because

22:55

there's lots of ways of making mistakes

22:57

we can make logical mistakes we can make

22:59

algebraic mistakes we can make cut and

23:01

paste mistakes and so on

23:02

all right so let's go back up to the

23:04

equation that we are trying to solve

23:06

which is our pleasant little cubic there

23:09

it is there

23:17

and let's check

23:25

that there it is there this is going to

23:28

be equal to

23:29

i'm just going to okay i'm going to just

23:31

maybe over here just replace the x with

23:34

x1 that's the easy way of doing it

23:36

i suppose

23:39

then we don't need this

23:43

okay and so let me just copy that so

23:48

it's just plugged this expression the

23:50

expression for x1 let me just check

23:52

what that looks like so that's this

23:55

thing

23:55

carries on here i don't think you can

23:57

see all of it but anyway

23:59

and um we plugged it in for x1 here and

24:02

x1 here and x1 here we got these terms

24:03

here and now we want to kind of

24:05

expand this and you know and simplify it

24:09

but to make life easier here i'm going

24:11

to

24:13

just restrict to all our terms of degree

24:16

7 or less in t so that we don't have to

24:19

worry about all those higher powers of t

24:21

which would make this blow out

24:24

actually maybe let me illustrate that

24:25

actually so let's actually just for fun

24:27

let me make a little space here that's

24:30

fine let's just

24:31

expand this out okay

24:34

compute expand

24:40

it's a big polynomial in t

24:47

all right and

24:50

okay we want to understand this so let's

24:52

have a look

24:54

at it as a polynomial in

24:57

t just polynomial collect

25:00

terms organize in terms of t

25:04

what do we get well there are these all

25:08

these higher powers of t

25:10

but notice the lowest power of t is t to

25:12

the eight

25:14

what's that tell us that tells us that

25:19

this is equal to zero up to

25:23

degree seven

25:27

in other words you make this big

25:28

computation all the terms involving t

25:31

t squared t cubed up to t to the seven

25:33

including the constant term also are all

25:35

zero

25:37

okay so how should we uh we don't need

25:38

all this stuff here so let's uh

25:40

summarize that let's check that this

25:42

thing here

25:44

okay it does actually

25:49

it's equal to zero up to degree seven

25:53

so we have indeed

25:56

right here let's put this

26:07

let's put this in a

26:14

display it

26:18

there we go that is a solution

26:21

oh t seven better not forget that one

26:25

that is a solution to our cubic equation

26:29

which is valid up to degree

26:32

7 expressing it as a

26:36

an on series in powers of t whose

26:39

coefficients

26:40

are

26:44

rational functions of the ci c1 c2 c3

26:48

and we see the catalan numbers are

26:49

involved but there are other constants

26:51

too

26:52

so a very big question is how to make

26:55

sense

26:57

of all these new

27:01

constants and

27:04

terms but in any case it really does

27:08

appear as if we have now a

27:10

new kind of solution to a cubic equation

27:14

quite different from that obtained by

27:17

del ferro and tartaglia

27:20

etc and purely in the algebraic

27:24

world without any square roots cube

27:26

roots or any kind of other radicals that

27:29

you can't actually calculate that this

27:31

is very exciting

27:32

but obviously we still have a lot more

27:35

work to do to

27:36

to understand fully this uh this cubic

27:39

situation

27:42

i'm norman wahlberger thanks for
