Marine Corps Songs
The United States Marine Corps has a distinct and revered musical tradition, with its most iconic piece being the "Marines' Hymn," which is considered the oldest official song of the U.S. Armed Forces and is widely recognized as the Marines' primary song. This hymn, with lyrics beginning "From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli," is played at official ceremonies and requires Marines to stand at attention when it is performed. The hymn's origins are uncertain, with no known composer for either the music or lyrics, and it had widespread use by the mid-1800s.
Beyond the hymn, the Marine Corps also performs a variety of other songs and musical pieces, including "America the Beautiful," "The Star-Spangled Banner," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Shenandoah," "Waltzing Matilda," "Goober Peas," "Honey Baby," and "Dixie Medley," which are often featured in performances and recordings by the United States Marine Band and other Marine Corps musical groups. The Marine Band also performs ceremonial music such as "Semper Fidelis," "Anchors Aweigh," and various bugle calls, which are integral to Marine Corps traditions and events.
