Semper Paratus - United States Coast Guard Marching Song

Semper Paratus

song

Semper Paratus, meaning "Always Ready" in Latin, is the official song and march of the United States Coast Guard. The original lyrics were written by Captain Francis Saltus Van Boskerck in 1922 while stationed in Savannah, Georgia, and the music was composed by him in 1927 on a "beat-up old piano" in Unalaska, Alaska. It made its debut in 1928 during the run of the film A Girl in Every Port at the Fox Theater in Washington D.C., where a detachment of Coast Guard officers performed it. The song's lyrics have been modified over time, with a new chorus introduced in 1943 by Homer Smith, Chief Cole, and Lieutenant Walton Butterfield, and the first line of the chorus changed in 1969 to its current form.
