John Wayne starred as Colonel Mike Kirby, the leader of a group of U.S. Special Forces known as the Green Berets, in the 1968 war film The Green Berets. He co-directed the film alongside Ray Kellogg and was also a producer. The movie, based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Robin Moore, was a strongly pro-military and anti-communist portrayal of American involvement in the Vietnam War, made during a period of intense anti-war sentiment in the United States. Wayne was so concerned about the negative perception of the war that he sought to make a film to present the pro-military viewpoint, securing full cooperation and materiel from President Lyndon B. Johnson and the U.S. Department of Defense. The film features a plot where a skeptical war correspondent, George Beckworth (played by David Janssen), is sent to cover the conflict and is eventually convinced of the righteousness of the American cause after accompanying Kirby and his team on missions, including a top-secret operation to capture a North Vietnamese general. The film was a financial success, grossing $32 million at the box office against a $7 million budget, but received almost universally negative reviews from critics, who criticized its propaganda nature and lack of historical accuracy.
