Functional Definitions of Good and Evil

Functional Definitions of Good and Evil

by Jared.

Good, adj.

Worth dying for. (Meant broadly as the will to defend an ideal and a means even unto lying down one's life.)

Evil, adj.

Worth killing for. (Meant broadly to mean using any means, including killing or war or laying down others' lives, toward an end.)

We see that Kant's definition of persons as ends in themselves helps us distinguish good and evil without overloaded circular definitions that depend on cultural explanations or appeals to group identity or authority.
