Stumbling on Happiness

Stumbling on Happiness

This book explains a lot of very interesting research on how people are bad at predicting how happy or unhappy major life changes would make them.

Gilbert explains how humans have a psychological immune system, which allows people to adjust to their situations (in around six months) and partly explains how people can retroactively reason that some small positive or a major negative was actually some major positive. (cf. The poem The Road Less Travelled where Frost tongue-in-cheek makes fun of people who read too much into small arbitrary decisions where either choice would have been a fine choice but people are dead-set on the idea that the one they chose was the one true choice. Phew! Wink!)
