"Whatever you focus on, you create more of ..."

[Re: depression and writing dark music.]

One of the things I realized was: whatever you focus on, you create more of. It's so simple. There's no debating that. You're not exercising your demons by entertaining them. You're inviting them into your life more.

So I just started going deeper and deeper into this darkness, and using the music as an excuse to prove my pain. [It was] so silly. I say it's silly, but it's part of the process; it's fine. But whatever you focus on, you create more of. It's so simple. So the more I was getting darker and darker [musically], the darker and darker [I felt], until finally it just becomes so painful and so heavy, that something has to give. ... The ego has a built-in self-destruct mechanism and it's called intense suffering.
