Adult elephants possess the largest brains of any land animal, weighing approximately 4.5 to 5 kilograms—nearly three times the size of a human brain. However, size alone does not explain their cognitive prowess.

Particularly noteworthy is the development of the elephant’s temporal lobes, regions associated with sensory processing and memory. The hippocampus—a critical brain structure involved in the consolidation of short-term into long-term memory and spatial navigation—is exceptionally large and well-developed in elephants. This enhanced hippocampus supports their ability to recall detailed information about vast territories and social networks.

Additionally, the cerebral cortex, responsible for higher cognitive functions, shows a high degree of folding (or gyrification), indicative of complex processing power. This cortical complexity is comparable to that of primates, hinting at the elephant’s advanced problem-solving abilities and social cognition.
