What is Patreon

August 26, 2023, 2:14 PM

Patreon is a platform that allows creators to receive funding directly from their fans, or patrons, on a recurring basis or per work of art. It was launched in May 2013 by musician Jack Conte and developer Sam Yam.

Creators on Patreon include video makers, podcasters, artists, writers, educators, and more. Here's a general idea of how it works:

  1. Content Creation: A creator produces content, which could be anything from videos and podcasts to comics and songs.
  1. Tiered Membership Levels: Creators can offer different levels of membership, each with its own set of benefits. For example, a creator might offer early access to content, exclusive content, physical rewards, or even a say in the creation process.
  1. Monetary Support: Patrons decide how much they want to pay (often on a monthly basis) to support the creator. In exchange, they get access to the creator's content, plus any additional benefits associated with their membership level.
  1. Funding & Fees: Patreon collects the money from patrons and then passes it on to the creator after taking a cut for platform fees.

Patreon provides creators with a more direct form of monetization than ad-based models, and it can provide a more stable income for creators, especially for those with a dedicated and engaged fanbase. This allows many creators to focus more on their craft and produce content that they and their audience value, without the same degree of commercial pressures that might be found on other platforms.
