Erwin Bauer

Bateson approached Bauer when both were studying Scopolomine.

Bauer was co author of the "Go-to" text for Nazi eugenics along with Lenz and Fischer.

He and Bateson were close friends and confidants (according to William Bateson wikipedia) and worked together at the genetic research facility at the John Innes Centre where they were joined by JBS Haldane

Erwin Baur (1875-1933) was a German botanist and geneticist, and a president of the Berlin Racial Hygiene Society (1917). He applied genetics to agriculture to improve the food supply. He also believed that applying principles of natural selection would improve the German race.

Baur began his career by studying medicine, but eventually devoted himself to botany (Erwin Baur, 1934). He was particularly interested in genetics, and founded the Institute for Genetics in Friedrichshagen in 1914, the first institute of its kind. (Erwin Baur, 1934) He also helped found the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut in 1929, where he also taught students in botany (Erwin Baur, 1934).

Baur also established himself as a renowned voice in genetics through his books on the subject, including the Introduction to Experimental Genetics and Human heredity and Racial Hygiene, the latter of which was co-authored with Eugen Fischer, and Fritz Lenz. This would become the "standard textbook on racial hygiene" in Germany, and was used as scientific justification for eugenic programs (particularly sterilization programs in Germany) regarding hereditary diseases, including mental illness (Fangerau & Muller, 2002).

Baur also led the fifth International Congress for Genetics, held in 1927 Berlin (Erwin Baur, 1934). His obituary was featured in the Eugenics Review journal.
