Subproject 95
The Atlas of Affective Meanings project was covertly funded by the CIA (through the Society for Investigation of Human Ecology) as part of the controversial MK-Ultra project in the name of Project 95. Historian of anthropology David H. Price commented that Osgood's cross-cultural communication project was in the same line with other studies under the MK-Ultra project that looked for effective propaganda techniques (Price, 2016, p. 417). Osgood later denied having been aware of receiving any funding from the CIA.
