The charges follow a five-year police investigation
Detectives working on what is thought to be the UK’s largest child-abuse inquiry have charged a man with 48 offences of alleged indecency with boys. The unnamed 49-year-old man was arrested as part of Operation React, an Avon and Somerset Police investigation.

He is due to appear before magistrates in Bristol on Friday.

Operation React is a five-year investigation focusing on allegations of abuse at the Kingswood Assessment Centre and Secure Unit in Bristol, which is now closed.

Massive investigation

Officers believe that as many as one in five of the 20,000 youngsters who passed through the centre could have been victims of abuse.

It is thought the investigation will eventually dwarf the long-running child abuse inquiry in north Wales.

Although Operation React is focused on the Bristol centre, a satellite team based at Taunton, Somerset, has been investigating allegations of abuse at the Olands Observation and Assessment Centre.

That centre, in nearby Milverton, was closed some years ago.

The man, who is formerly from the Taunton area, is believed to have been arrested in Weymouth, Dorset.

Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation into allegations of sexual and physical abuse of children and young people at several institutions.

The investigation was set up last week to look into allegations at Kingswood assessment centre and Kingswood secure unit in south Gloucestershire. Both closed in the 1980s. Since launching Operation React police have received new allegations about other institutions in the area, including the Olands observation and assessment centre in Milverton, Somerset.

A statement from Somerset Council, which ran Olands centre until its closure in 1993, said the investigation appeared to relate to one former employee. Allegations were about events between 1974 and 1987.
