History

The nucleus for the Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry (as it was originally called) was inspired by the multi-disciplinary nature of the 1955 Canada-hosted International Congress of Child Psychiatry and Allied Disciplines. Established a year later as a network to bring together like-minded professionals and encourage the reporting of research and clinical findings, the resulting Association adopted wider aims including those of the child and family.

In the founder Emanuel Miller's own words: the coming into being of the Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry and their allied disciplines was prompted by the desire of many to study the various ways in which the life of the child was influenced, indeed to make clear the many dimensions or co-ordinates by which the growing human organism was caught or could be defined.

That study has been going on for over 50 years!
