2.6 Trust and Confidence
<br/>
Trust and Confidence (T&C) are essential to and underpin any Electronic
<br/>
Commerce application and real deployment. To achieve T&C requires not only
<br/>
security technologies but also, and even more importantly, the technical and
<br/>
organisational frameworks and infrastructures that make the deployment of
<br/>
these technologies viable and consistent. In order to achieve this, the definition
<br/>
of best practices should be pursued, by wide scale deployment and large-scale
<br/>
trials with proactive capture of experience and lessons learned. Furthermore,
<br/>
the adequacy and suitability of trust solutions should be verified with the
<br/>
involvement of user communities and user organisations in the whole value
<br/>
chain (here after generically indicated as “Users”) and in different business
<br/>
sectors. Neither individual projects nor a fragmented and diverse ensemble of
<br/>
projects could accomplish this.
<br/>
Regarding security, all commercial transactions require a high degree of secu-rity.
<br/>
This is particularly relevant when, as in an Internet-mediated e-commerce
<br/>
environment, the transaction happens with no physical contact over an anony-mous
<br/>
global network. Trusted means of identification and of proof of transac-tion
<br/>
must be developed. In this context, a clear regulatory and legal framework
<br/>
is a necessary complement. The projects in this category evaluate different
<br/>
technological solutions to the problems of secure transactions between distant
<br/>
parties over networks (firewalls, identification, authentication and others).
<br/>
The T&C cluster will offer projects the possibility to participate in an initiative
<br/>
that will bring the “Users” and their requirements closer to them. The cluster will
<br/>
both develop coherent pictures of the results and lessons learned in projects
<br/>
and in real life pilots and trials as well as consolidate the “Users” requirements
<br/>
as distilled from targeted and focussed investigations and studies. The under-standing
<br/>
being achieved by the level of matching or mismatching between
<br/>
requirements and proposed solutions would be beneficial and stimulating for all
<br/>
members of the cluster. The cluster will act as focal point for communication
<br/>
with, for example, the European Internet Forum and CEN/ISSS.
<br/>
Some examples of projects relevant to this cluster are given below.
