Lambda (Chris Langton)

Lambda:
Lambda is the percentage of local transitions leading to non-quiescient states. The
lambda options allow for varying degrees of quiescience to be selected as well as the
specification of symmetrical or non-symmetrical rule selection

The lambda parameter gives the percentage of non-zero transitions in the CA transition
table. Langton found a qualitative phase shift in the structure of 1-d CAs as lambda was
increased from low values to high values. It hints at a movement through Wolfram's 4
classifications of CAs of:

·
Class I -> Class II -> Class IV -> Class III

Simply, as lambda increases, periods of stable, periodic behavior are slowly replaced by
"complex" structures and interactions which are replaced by seeming random, chaotic
behavior.
