And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Come up unto Me to the mount, and be there, and I give to thee the tables of stone, and the law, and The Command, which I have written to direct them.' Exodus 24:12

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law [serve the Torah of Hashem/YHWH)), but in my sinful nature a slave to the [Chok] law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit [Torah of the Ruach HaKodesh] who gives life has set you free from the [Chok] law of sin and death. For what the [Torah/God’s] law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering in order that the full statue requirement of the [Torah/God’s] law  might be fulfilled in us who’s Way of Life according to the [Ruach Hakodesh] Spirit and not in accordance with the flesh. Romans 7

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the [Ruach HaKodesh] Spirit have their minds set on what the [Ruach Hakodesh] Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the [Ruach Hakodesh] Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to [Torah] God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh [law of sin] cannot please God. Romans 8

The law was not a means of meriting salvation. An Israelite would have known that believing was at the heart of right relationship with Yahweh, not mere mechanical observance of a list of do’s and don’ts.

In other words, legalism was not intrinsic to a biblical theology of the law. The heart of salvation in biblical theology—across both testaments—is believing loyalty to Yahweh.

The link between the law and the heavenly council is noted several times in the New Testament,

“delivered by angels” (Acts 7:53) and “declared by angels” (Heb 2:2).

Salvation in the Old Testament meant love for Yahweh alone. One had to believe that Yahweh was the God of all gods, trusting that this Most High God had chosen covenant relationship with Israel to the detriment of all other nations. The law was how one demonstrated that love—that loyalty. Salvation was not merited. Yahweh alone had initiated the relationship. Yahweh’s choice and covenant promise had to be believed. An Israelite’s believing loyalty was shown by faithfulness to the law.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.

• Matthew 23:15“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.
• Matthew 23:23“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
