Genesis 27

27 And it cometh to pass that Isaac [is] aged, and his eyes are too dim for seeing, and he calleth Esau his elder son, and saith unto him, My son;' and he saith unto him, Here [am] I.'

^2 ^And he saith, `Lo, I pray thee, I have become aged, I have not known the day of my death;

^3 ^and now, take up, I pray thee, thy instruments, thy quiver, and thy bow, and go out to the field, and hunt for me provision,

^4 ^and make for me tasteful things, [such] as I have loved, and bring in to me, and I do eat, so that my soul doth bless thee before I die.'

^5 ^And Rebekah is hearkening while Isaac is speaking unto Esau his son; and Esau goeth to the field to hunt provision -- to bring in;

^6 ^and Rebekah hath spoken unto Jacob her son, saying, `Lo, I have heard thy father speaking unto Esau thy brother, saying,

^7 ^Bring for me provision, and make for me tasteful things, and I do eat, and bless thee before Jehovah before my death.

^8 `And now, my son, hearken to my voice, to that which I am commanding thee:

^9 ^Go, I pray thee, unto the flock, and take for me from thence two good kids of the goats, and I make them tasteful things for thy father, [such] as he hath loved;

^10 ^and thou hast taken in to thy father, and he hath eaten, so that his soul doth bless thee before his death.

^11 ^And Jacob saith unto Rebekah his mother, `Lo, Esau my brother [is] a hairy man, and I a smooth man,

^12 ^it may be my father doth feel me, and I have been in his eyes as a deceiver, and have brought upon me disesteem, and not a blessing;'

^13 ^and his mother saith to him, `On me thy disesteem, my son; only hearken to my voice, and go, take for me.'

^14 ^And he goeth, and taketh, and bringeth to his mother, and his mother maketh tasteful things, [such] as his father hath loved;

^15 ^and Rebekah taketh the desirable garments of Esau her elder son, which [are] with her in the house, and doth put on Jacob her younger son;

^16 ^and the skins of the kids of the goats she hath put on his hands, and on the smooth of his neck,

^17 ^and she giveth the tasteful things, and the bread which she hath made, into the hand of Jacob her son.

^18 ^And he cometh in unto his father, and saith, My father;' and he saith, Here [am] I; who [art] thou, my son?'

^19 ^And Jacob saith unto his father, `I [am] Esau thy first-born; I have done as thou hast spoken unto me; rise, I pray thee, sit, and eat of my provision, so that thy soul doth bless me.'

^20 ^And Isaac saith unto his son, What [is] this thou hast hasted to find, my son?' and he saith, That which Jehovah thy God hath caused to come before me.'

^21 ^And Isaac saith unto Jacob, `Come nigh, I pray thee, and I feel thee, my son, whether thou [art] he, my son Esau, or not.'

^22 ^And Jacob cometh nigh unto Isaac his father, and he feeleth him, and saith, `The voice [is] the voice of Jacob, and the hands hands of Esau.'

^23 ^And he hath not discerned him, for his hands have been hairy, as the hands of Esau his brother, and he blesseth him,

^24 ^and saith, Thou art he -- my son Esau?' and he saith, I [am].'

^25 ^And he saith, `Bring nigh to me, and I do eat of my son's provision, so that my soul doth bless thee;' and he bringeth nigh to him, and he eateth; and he bringeth to him wine, and he drinketh.

^26 ^And Isaac his father saith to him, `Come nigh, I pray thee, and kiss me, my son;'

^27 ^and he cometh nigh, and kisseth him, and he smelleth the fragrance of his garments, and blesseth him, and saith, `See, the fragrance of my son [is] as the fragrance of a field which Jehovah hath blessed;

^28 ^and God doth give to thee of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and abundance of corn and wine;

^29 ^peoples serve thee, and nations bow themselves to thee, be thou mighty over thy brethren, and the sons of thy mother bow themselves to thee; those who curse thee [are] cursed, and those who bless thee [are] blessed.'

^30 ^And it cometh to pass, as Isaac hath finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob is only just going out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother hath come in from his hunting;

^31 ^and he also maketh tasteful things, and bringeth to his father, and saith to his father, `Let my father arise, and eat of his son's provision, so that thy soul doth bless me.'

^32 ^And Isaac his father saith to him, Who [art] thou?' and he saith, I [am] thy son, thy first-born, Esau;'

^33 ^and Isaac trembleth a very great trembling, and saith, `Who, now, [is] he who hath provided provision, and bringeth in to me, and I eat of all before thou comest in, and I bless him? -- yea, blessed is he.'

^34 ^When Esau heareth the words of his father, then he crieth a very great and bitter cry, and saith to his father, `Bless me, me also, O my father;'

^35 ^and he saith, `Thy brother hath come with subtilty, and taketh thy blessing.'

^36 ^And he saith, Is it because [one] called his name Jacob that he doth take me by the heel these two times? my birthright he hath taken; and lo, now, he hath taken my blessing;' he saith also, Hast thou not kept back a blessing for me?'

^37 ^And Isaac answereth and saith to Esau, `Lo, a mighty one have I set him over thee, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants, and [with] corn and wine have I sustained him; and for thee now, what shall I do, my son?'

^38 ^And Esau saith unto his father, `One blessing hast thou my father? bless me, me also, O my father;' and Esau lifteth up his voice, and weepeth.

^39 ^And Isaac his father answereth and saith unto him, `Lo, of the fatness of the earth is thy dwelling, and of the dew of the heavens from above;

^40 ^and by thy sword dost thou live, and thy brother dost thou serve; and it hath come to pass when thou rulest, that thou hast broken his yoke from off thy neck.'

^41 ^And Esau hateth Jacob, because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau saith in his heart, `The days of mourning [for] my father draw near, and I slay Jacob my brother.'

^42 ^And the words of Esau her elder son are declared to Rebekah, and she sendeth and calleth for Jacob her younger son, and saith unto him, `Lo, Esau thy brother is comforting himself in regard to thee -- to slay thee;

^43 ^and now, my son, hearken to my voice, and rise, flee for thyself unto Laban my brother, to Haran,

^44 ^and thou hast dwelt with him some days, till thy brother's fury turn back,

^45 ^till thy brother's anger turn back from thee, and he hath forgotten that which thou hast done to him, and I have sent and taken thee from thence; why am I bereaved even of you both the same day?'

^46 ^And Rebekah saith unto Isaac, `I have been disgusted with my life because of the presence of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these -- from the daughters of the land -- why do I live?'

27 Now it was when Isaac grew old and his eyes were too dim to see, that he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, “My son.”

“Here I am,” he said to him.

2 “Look, I’m old,” he said. “I don’t know the day of my death. 3 So now, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt me some game. 4 Then prepare me a delicious meal that I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”

5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac was speaking to Esau his son. So while Esau went to the field to hunt game to bring in, 6 Rebekah said to Jacob her son, “Look, I heard your father speaking to your brother Esau saying, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare me a delicious meal that I may eat and bless you in Adonai’s presence before my death.’ 8 So now, my son, listen to my voice, to what I am commanding you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me two good young goats from there, so that I may prepare them as a delicious meal for your father—that he’ll love. 10 Then you’ll bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”

11 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I’m a smooth man. 12 Perhaps my father will touch me, and he’ll take me for a mocker, and I’ll bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.”

13 Then his mother said to him, “Let your curse fall on me, my son. Just listen to me, and go, get them for me.”

14 So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared a delicious meal that his father would love. 15 Rebekah also took her elder son Esau’s favorite clothes that were with her in the house, and she put them on her younger son Jacob, 16 along with the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the hairless part of his neck. 17 She put the delicious meal and the bread that she had prepared in the hand of Jacob her son.

18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.”

And he said, “I’m here. Who are you, my son?”

19 Then Jacob said to his father, “I’m your firstborn, Esau. I’ve done just what you said to me. Sit up, please, and eat some of my wild game so that your soul may bless me.”

20 Then Isaac said to his son, “How in the world were you able to find it so quickly, my son?”

He said, “Because Adonai your God made it happen for me.”

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can feel you my son—whether or not you really are my son Esau.”

22 So Jacob came closer to his father Isaac, and he felt him. Then he said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice but the hands are Esau’s hands.” 23 He did not recognize him because his hands were like the hairy hands of his brother Esau. So he blessed him. 24 But he said, “Are you really my son Esau?”

So he said, “I am.”

25 Then he said, “Bring it to me and I’ll eat some of my son’s wild game, so that my soul may bless you.” So he brought it to him and he ate, and he brought him wine and he drank.

26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come closer and kiss me my son.” 27 So he came closer and kissed him. When he smelled the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said,

“Behold, the smell of my son

is like the smell of a field

that Adonai has blessed.

28 May God give you—

from the dew of the sky

and from the fatness of the land—

an abundance of grain and new wine.

29 May peoples serve you

and may nations bow down to you.

Be master over your brothers.

May your mother’s sons bow down to you.

May those who curse you be cursed

and may those who bless you be blessed.”

30 No sooner had Isaac finished blessing Jacob and Jacob had just gone out from his father Isaac’s presence, than Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 Then he also prepared a delicious meal and brought it to his father, and he said to his father, “Let my father get up and eat of his son’s wild game that your soul may bless me.”

32 His father Isaac said, “Who are you?”

And he said, “I am your son, your first-born, Esau.”

33 Then Isaac trembled with intense trembling and said, “Who was it then that hunted wild game and brought it to me? I ate it all just before you came and I blessed him—and yes, he will be blessed.”

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he shouted with an intensely bitter groan. Then he said to his father, “Bless me, me too, my father!”

35 Then he said, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.”

36 He said, “Is this why he was named Jacob—since he’s tricked me twice already? My birthright he’s taken. Look! Now he’s taken my blessing!” Then he said, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”

37 Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, I’ve made him master over you, and all your brothers I’ve given to him as servants. I’ve provided him with grain and new wine. What then can I do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you just have one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

39 Then Isaac his father said to him,

“Behold, away from the land’s fatness shall your dwelling be,

    away from the dew of the sky above.

40 By your sword shall you live,

and your brother shall you serve.

But when you tear yourself loose,

you will tear his yoke off your neck.”

41 So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “Let the time for mourning my father draw near, so that I can kill my brother Jacob!”

42 Now to Rebekah was reported the words of Esau her elder son. So she sent and called for Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Look, your brother Esau is consoling himself about you with the thought of killing you. 43 So now my son, listen to my voice. Get up—flee to Laban my brother in Haran! 44 Then stay with him a few days, until your brother’s rage subsides, 45 until your brother’s rage turns away from you and he forgets what you’ve done to him. Then I’ll send for you and get you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these women, from the daughters of the land what is life to me?”

OJB

27 And it came to pass, that when Yitzchak was zaken (old),and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esav bno hagadol and said unto him, Beni: and he said unto him, Hineni.

2 And he said, Hinei now, I am old, I know not my yom mot:

3 Therefore take, now, thy kelim (weapons), thy quiver and thy keshet (bow), and go out to the sadeh, and hunt me some wild game;

4 And make me matamim (savory meat, tasty food), such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my nefesh may make a brocha upon thee before I die.

5 And Rivkah heard when Yitzchak spoke to Esav bno. And Esav went to the sadeh to hunt for wild game, and to bring it

6 And Rivkah spoke unto Ya’akov her ben, saying, Hinei, I heard avicha speak unto Esav achicha, saying,

7 Bring me wild game, and make me matamim, that I may eat, and make a brocha upon thee before Hashem before my mot.

8 Now therefore, beni (my son), obey my kol (voice) according to that which I command thee.

9 Go now to the tzon, and bring me from there two gedayei izzim tovim (good kids of goats); and I will make them matamim for avicha, such as he loveth:

10 And thou shalt bring it to avicha, that he may eat, and that he may make a brocha upon thee before his mot.

11 And Ya’akov said to Rivkah immo, Look, Esav achi is an ish sa’ir (hairy man), and I am an ish chalak (smooth man)

12 What if avi will touch me, and I shall seem to him as a meta’te’a (mocker); and I shall bring a kelalah upon me, and not a brocha.

13 And immo said unto him, Upon me be thy kelalah, beni; only obey my kol (voice), and go bring me them.

14 And he went, and got, and brought them to immo: and immo made matamim, such as aviv loved.

15 And Rivkah took begadim of Esav her ben hagadol, the chamudot (best ones) which were with her in the bais, and dressed Ya’akov her ben hakatan;

16 And with orot gedayei haizzim (skins of the kids of the goats) she dressed and covered his hands, and also upon the smooth of his tzavar (neck);

17 And she gave the matamim and the lechem, which she had prepared, into the yad Ya’akov her ben.

18 And he came unto aviv, and said, Avi; and he said, Hineni; who art thou, beni?

19 And Ya’akov said unto aviv, I am Esav thy bechor; I have done according as thou told me; arise, now, sit up and eat of my wild game, that thy nefesh may make a brocha upon me.

20 And Yitzchak said unto bno, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, beni? And he said, Hashem Eloheicha worked it out for me.

21 And Yitzchak said unto Ya’akov, Come near, now, that I may touch thee, beni, indeed, whether thou be beni Esav or not.

22 And Ya’akov went near unto Yitzchak aviv; and he touched him, and said, The kol is kol Ya’akov, but the yadayim are the yedei Esav.

23 And he discerned him not, for his hands were se’irot, as yedei Esav achiv; so he made a brocha upon him

24 And he said, Art thou indeed beni Esav? And he said, I am.

25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of the wild game of beni, that my nefesh may make a brocha upon thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat; and he brought him yayin and he drank.

26 And aviv Yitzchak said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me beni.

27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the reiach (smell) of his begadim, and made a brocha upon him, and said, See, the reiach of beni is as the reiach of a sadeh upon which Hashem hath made a brocha;

28 Therefore HaElohim give thee of the tal haShomayim, and the fatness of ha’aretz, and plenty of dagan and tirosh;

29 Let people serve thee, and amim bow down to thee: be gevir over thy achim, and let bnei immecha bow down to thee: arur be every one that curseth thee, and baruch be he that blesseh thee.

30 And as soon as Yitzchak had completed making on Ya’akov a brocha, and Ya’akov had hardly gone out from the presence of Yitzchak aviv, that Esav achiv came in from his hunt.

31 And he also had prepared matamim, and brought it unto aviv and said unto aviv, Let avi arise, and eat of the wild game of bno, that thy nefesh may make a brocha upon me.

32 And Yitzchak aviv said unto him, Mi atah? (Who art thou?) And he said, I am binecha, thy bechor Esav.

33 And Yitzchak trembled with charadah gedolah ad me’od (exceedingly great trembling), and said, Who? Where is he that hath hunted wild game, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all of it before thou camest, and have made a brocha upon him? And indeed he shall be baruch (blessed)!

34 And when Esav heard the words of aviv, he cried with tzeakah gedolah umarah ad me’od (a great and exceeding bitter cry), and said unto aviv, Make a brocha on me, even me also, O avi.

35 And he said, Achicha came with mirmah (deceit), and hath taken away thy brocha.

36 And he said, Is not he rightly called shmo Ya’akov? for vaya’keveni (now he deceived/outwitted me) these two times he took away my bechorah (birthright); and, hinei, now he hath taken away my brocha (blessing). And he asked, Hast thou not reserved a brocha for me?

37 And Yitzchak answered and said unto Esav, See, I have made him gevir over you, and all his achim have I given to him for avadim; and with dagan and tirosh have I sustained him; and what shall I do now unto thee, beni?

38 And Esav said unto aviv, Hast thou but one brocha, avi? Make a brocha on me, even me also, O avi. And Esav lifted up his kol (voice), and wept.

39 And Yitzchak aviv answered and said unto him, Hinei, thy moshav (dwelling) shall be the fatness of ha’aretz, and of the tal HaShomayim from above;

40 And by thy cherev shalt thou live, and shalt serve achicha; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt become restless, that thou shalt break his ol (yoke) from off thy tzavar (neck).

41 And Esav hated Ya’akov because of the brocha wherewith aviv made a brocha upon him: and Esav said in his lev, The yemei evel (days of mourning) for avi are at hand; then will I slay Ya’akov achi.

42 And these words of Esav her ben hagadol were told to Rivkah; and she sent and called Ya’akov her ben hakatan, and said unto him, Hinei, Esav achicha, as touching thee, doth console himself, purposing to kill thee.

43 Now therefore, beni, shema bekoli (listen to my voice)! Arise, flee thou to Lavan achi to Charan;

44 And tarry with him a few days, until chamat achicha subsides;

45 And when af achicha subsides from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him; then I will send, and get thee from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in yom echad (one day, the same day)?

46 And Rivkah said to Yitzchak, I am weary of my life because of the Banot Chet: if Ya’akov take an isha of the Banot Chet (Hittite women) such as these which are of the banot ha’aretz, what will chayyim to me be?
