42 Lk 9.3 Sent without material provisions
Luke 9:1-5 (ESV)
^1 And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,
^2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
^3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.
^4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.
^5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
Jesus sent them out without provisions, from a human perspective, and without the means (no carrying bag) to avail themselves of provisions if offered to them in the future. The 12 were to learn by experiencing (just as Heb 5.8 says Jesus "learned obedience by the things He suffered"), and demonstrate to others that God was literally all they needed. But they were provided something not tangible or visible, but real by faith (being convinced of the reality of something you can't see as stated in Heb 11.1): Divine power and authority over demons, and ability to invoke God's power to heal bodies. The Divine provision was just what they needed and which couldn't be provided by those to whom they would be ministering. The authority and power would deal with the demons who would otherwise oppose them and undermine their mission, and the healing power would authenticate their claims of being apostles of the Messiah, and would enable their message of the gospel of the Kingdom to be well-received.
