The Ice Age
A video explaining how the “Ice Age” fits in the Genesis narrative, especially Gen 8.22, can be seen at this link: ice-age.
The physical evidence suggests the following:
- The theory of “uniformity”, that geophysical processes observed in the present are consistent with those in the past cannot account for the thick accumulations of ice in the polar ice caps. The present rates of precipitation, even if extended over long periods of time, cannot result in the thickness of those ice sheets. The theory of uniformity is criticized and presented as erroneous in 2 Pet 3.3-6.
- The Flood left global oceans 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than current oceans. The warm water underneath cooler air would have caused massive evaporation, thus rainfall, of a quantity adequate to create the thickness of the ice sheets.
- The instability of the earth’s crust immediately after the Flood would have caused significant global volcanic activity, creating micron-sized ash clouds able to be suspended in the atmosphere for years. The ash cloud would, for a period of a few hundred years, have reflected solar energy back into space and cooled the planet such that the super abundant rainfall would become snow and ice, forming the ice sheets and glaciers. The global glaciation, then, would have taken a few hundred years, not thousands.
- As the ocean-atmosphere temperature eventually reached equilibrium the evaporation would have slowed to rates seen today. Concurrently the suspended volcanic ash cloud would gradually fall to earth, admitting levels of solar energy to the surface as seen today. This reduction of atmospheric moisture combined with increased in solar energy on earth would have halted the buildup of the glaciers and melted them back toward their modern day sizes and locations.
