Day 4: Sun, moon, and stars

The astronomical bodies God created on day four had four purposes:

1 Illumination.

2 Division of the 24-hour cycle into daytime and nighttime.

3 Signification by providing signs in the heavens, possibly for navigation and certainly at the Nativity.

4 Temporalization providing consistent time divisions suitable for recording and calculating seasons, days, and years.

Psalm 19.1-6 , especially verse 1, adds two other purposes:

5 Glorification of God. Ps 19.1

6 Revelation of His creative works. Ps 19.1

7 Prove and emphasize the reliabilty of God’s promises to Israel, Jer 31.35-36
