God, Greatness of

Psalm 8:6–9 (ESV)

6You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,

7all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,

8the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

9O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

God created man to have over all the earth-bound creatures, as stated in Ps 8.6-8, His creative genius is wonderful to behold. Before sin corrupted things Adam and Eve somehow had the power to communicate with and control all these creatures. Even now, in the sin-cursed world, though man can no longer communicate directly with or exert voluntary control over all these creatures, he still has the ability to impose his will on any of them he can find and approach. It is amazing to think little people, weighing 150 to 250 pounds or so with a three pound brain can capture a sperm whale weighing 100,000 pounds with a brain over six times heavier (20 pounds).

Indeed, God’s name is majestic in all the earth!
