40 Mt 8.25-27 Jesus’ disciples’ double-mindedness on display

In the following narrative, on the one hand the disciples, having already seen ample evidence of Jesus’ Messianic credentials and displays of His divine power, correctly asked Jesus to save them. They didn’t ask Him to help them bail out the water, but to save them wholesale, treating Him like God He is. On the other hand, after He had done so they treated Him as someone less than God, surprised at the power He displayed in calming the storm, asking themselves, “What kind of man is this?”

Matthew 8:18–27 (NIV84)

18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.

...

23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.

24Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

25The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
